Detailed Breakdown of Changes

Mid-Year COLA Update

In an unusual move, the SSA has approved a mid-year 2.5% COLA effective July 1, 2025. This adjustment addresses the persistent inflation that has outpaced forecasts since January 2025.

The average retiree will see an increase of approximately $50 in their monthly benefits, raising the average payment to $1,976

Income Limits Adjustment

Beneficiaries under full retirement age can now earn up to $23,400/year without a reduction in benefits. For those reaching full retirement age in 2025, the limit is $62,160/year

Earnings above these thresholds will result in benefit reductions: $1 withheld for every $2 earned over the limit for those under full retirement age, and $1 for every $3 for those reaching full retirement age in 2025.

Payment Schedule Revisions

Social Security payments continue to be distributed based on beneficiaries’ birth dates:

  • 1st–10th: Second Wednesday of the month
  • 11th–20th: Third Wednesday
  • 21st–31st: Fourth Wednesday

For SSI recipients, due to calendar quirks, there will be no payment in June 2025, as the payment was issued early on May 30. However, double payments are scheduled for August, October, and December to compensate for similar scheduling conflicts.

Eligibility Thresholds Update

The SSA has increased the Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) limits to $1,620/month for non-blind individuals and $2,700/month for blind individuals.

Additionally, the earnings required to earn one Social Security credit have risen to $1,810, with a maximum of four credits attainable per year.

Social Security Fairness Act

Enacted in January 2025, the Social Security Fairness Act eliminates the Windfall Elimination Provision and Government Pension Offset.

This change increases benefits for approximately 3 million public sector workers who were previously excluded or undercompensated.

The SSA is prioritizing the processing of these retroactive payments, which may lead to delays in other services.

The July 2025 updates to Social Security benefits are among the most comprehensive in recent years, addressing inflation, income thresholds, and long-standing policy issues.

Beneficiaries should review these changes carefully to understand their impact and plan accordingly.

FAQs

How will the mid-year COLA affect my benefits?

The 2.5% COLA effective July 1, 2025, will increase the average retiree’s monthly benefit by approximately $50, adjusting payments to better reflect current inflation rates.

Will the Social Security Fairness Act impact my benefits?

If you are a public sector worker previously affected by the Windfall Elimination Provision or Government Pension Offset, you may see increased benefits due to the elimination of these provisions under the Fairness Act.

Why didn’t I receive an SSI payment in June 2025?

Due to the first of June falling on a weekend, SSI payments were issued early on May 30. As a result, there was no separate payment in June. Similar adjustments are scheduled for August, October, and December.
